 Competitions and Awards

The Glaziers Company is committed to encouraging the career development of undergraduates and young artists working in architectural glass design, and of those wishing to practise the conservation of historic glass.

The Company organises annually the Stevens Competition for Architectural Glass Design. This is the only national competition of its kind and attracts entries from students and young artists from all over the country

The competition demands an imaginative approach to design and workmanship of high quality. Entries are assessed by a distinguished panel of practising craftsmen. In recent years the competition has attracted several sponsors who have commissioned work of their choice from among the prizewinning entries. Sponsored commissions have kick-started the careers of several talented young glass artists.

The 40 week Award for Excellence and the 10 week Ashton Hill Awards offer unique and valuable opportunities for those wishing to develop their skills towards a practical career in stained glass. Recipients will be placed in high quality working studios where they will undertake work experience on actual architectural projects with the supervision, guidance and tuition of experience professionals. It can be challenging, even difficult, being away from your home, working what may be long hours, finding yourself less skilled than those around you, needing to do things you have never done before. However the rewards are great. All but two of the fourteen recipients of our Awards over the past five years are successfully working with glass still today.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

New in 2007, the Glaziers' Trust is introducing short duration Professional Development Awards aimed to assist practitioners in the craft of at least five years working experience who seek to expand and/or enhance their professional skills. It is intended that the Awards should assist professionals, who cannot afford to leave their work for long periods, towards the attainment of Accredited status as conservators, or to widen their skills for use in creating new work. Tuition may take the form of short courses or studio placements under the direction of suitable senior experts in their fields.

We would like to encourage you to apply.
